Two postures that do a lot of good for me are spinal-twist (ardha matsyendrasana), which really helps my spine, and pigeon (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (I think!!)). Pigeon really stretches the glutes, which can be the source of a lot of back pain.
That's just for me, though. More generally, I think one of the keys is to have a good variety of complimentary postures. Doing only backbends, for example, without any counter-postures probably won't be very good on your back.
I have suffered from back pain in my lower back after an injury a few years ago.
I would say the most essential thing you can do is focus on building up your core strength and abdominal muscles. The reason is, most back pain is caused from poor posture from weak stomachs. The plank and the boat pose are good for this.
