How do I meditate?

I am trying to start a daily meditation practice. I get up early about 6:30 and I sit in my corner, fully equipped with a little buddha shrine, incense and cushions galore and then I bring by counting my counting breath. I only last about 2 minutes (and that seems like an awfully long time) my hips and knees start to hurt and then the only distraction from that seems to be a very detailed scrutiny of the day ahead.
What am I doing wrong?

I would strongly advise

I would strongly advise everyone to make an effort to start with a serious course in meditation in a center or group under the guidance of an experienced teacher, preferably with at least a few days in silence. This should give you a genuine feeling of the effect that meditation can have on the mind.

It is very difficult for beginners to concentrate while start practicing meditation. I strongly recommend start guided meditation. You can easily find guided meditation audios online and start following instruction.

or you can go for some course !
